Dr. Semion Polinov is a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Haifa’s Department of Maritime Technology and a Marine Geoinformation Researcher at the Technion’s Coastal and Marine Engineering Research Institute. His research focuses on the development of remote sensing (active and passive, nighttime) and GIS technologies for monitoring sea and ocean environments, especially sea surface pollution, and the use of autonomous monitoring systems. Through remote sensing and GIS technology, his Ph.D. research focused on developing methods for monitoring marine human activities. I am currently working on developing sensors for monitoring the sea surface, water column, and seabed, including AUVs, USVs, UAVs, buoys, and others. His previous experience includes data analysis for a port construction project. Semion won an award in 2021 and has been recognized by the Israel Society of Ecology and Environmental Studies for the best paper of the year “Spatial and temporal assessment of oil spills in the Mediterranean Sea”. In 2023, he was part of the winning consortium for the EU Grant: UCPM Prevention and Preparedness and other granted research projects “East Med Cross-border Marine Environmental Risk Assessment through E-Platform Integrated Data Management”. His work, published in leading journals, integrates remote sensing, GIS, and machine learning to advance maritime environmental protection.
